How to qualify for a USDA loan

With the right qualifications, a USDA loan can be your ticket to homeownership. You must meet certain guidelines in order for this type of financing option:


  • Must be purchasing a home in an eligible area for the USDA loan.
  • Provide verifiable employment history lasting two years beforehand AND bank statements showing consistent income throughout those periods.
  • Wait for one to two years before applying for the loan after bankruptcy, or three years after a foreclosure.
  • Have a back-end debt ratio (mortgage plus all monthly debt payments) of no more than 43 percent of gross monthly income.

How to Apply For A USDA Loan

Applying for a USDA loan requires a couple of key steps:

  • When applying for a USDA loan, it’s important to know your budget and how much money you can spend on a new home. You will need current income information as well as expenses from previous months in order to calculate what kind of monthly payment would be manageable with these numbers before submitting any applications.
  • The house you are looking to buy must pass the property requirements and the appraisal must meet the USDA standards. Make sure that you are aware of these requirements.
  • Be sure all of your documents are in order. Make two years' worth of tax returns; recent pay stubs, and driver's license available because they'll need them all during the process. You should also provide full statements from any account where money is held (including checking accounts) as well as information on retirement plans like 401(k)’s if applicable.
